The Black Copper Marans trace their roots back to the 13th century in the Marans region of France. They are known for laying the darkest brown egg of any chicken in the world. They are also prized by many of the world's top chefs for exceptional flavor. (James Bond would eat no other egg) Our birds are breed to APA standards which adheres to the French standard calling for among other things, feathered shanks and toes. They are one of our all time favorite birds. A wonderful, heritage, duel purpose bird that lays what we consider to be the best egg in the business. They are calm, friendly and not flighty. If we were limited to just one bird this would have to be given strong consideration.
**Special note on egg color for Marans hatching eggs. Please be aware that egg color varies greatly based upon a number of factors. Age of the bird, where she is in the laying cycle and a number of other factors all influence the color of the egg. Every bird in our breeding pen at one point in her life laid a 7 or 8 on the color chart. Please don't expect to receive eggs that are all 7 or 8. We show pictures of some of our very dark eggs to show what you should be able to attain using our stock and with a solid breeding program. We hatch out many hundreds of these birds a year and only keep the best of the best for our breeding program. If you receive lighter eggs be assured that the bird that laid that egg is only in our breeder pen because at on point in her life she was laying very dark eggs.
